PTSD & Trauma Screening Methodology

A comprehensive, research-backed approach integrating DSM-5 criteria and body-based trauma assessment

Why Our PTSD Assessment Is Comprehensive

Most PTSD screenings only use DSM-5 criteria, focusing on thoughts and behaviors. Our assessment goes deeper by integrating body-based trauma research from Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, Complex PTSD insights from Dr. Judith Herman, and EMDR principles from Dr. Francine Shapiro.

This means we don't just ask "Do you have flashbacks?" We evaluate how trauma lives in your nervous system, relationships, body sensations, and worldview—giving you a complete picture that helps explain symptoms traditional medicine often misses.

Key Researchers & Frameworks

American Psychiatric Association

DSM-5 PTSD Criteria

Our assessment uses all 20 DSM-5 symptoms across Criteria A-H, the gold standard for PTSD diagnosis used by psychiatrists worldwide.

Dr. Bessel van der Kolk

The Body Keeps the Score

We integrate his groundbreaking body-based trauma approach, evaluating physical reactions to triggers, dissociation, hypervigilance, and somatic symptoms that traditional assessments miss.

Dr. Judith Herman

Complex PTSD Research

Her work on Complex PTSD informs our assessment of negative beliefs, emotional dysregulation, and relational trauma patterns beyond single-incident trauma.

Dr. Patricia Resick

Cognitive Processing Therapy

CPT research guides our questions about blame patterns and negative cognitions about self, others, and the world.

Dr. Francine Shapiro

EMDR Therapy

EMDR principles inform our evaluation of intrusive memories, flashbacks, and trigger responses.

Dr. John Briere

Trauma Symptom Inventory

His validated inventory contributes to our assessment of anhedonia, sleep disturbances, and concentration difficulties.

How We Score Your Results

Symptom Frequency: Each question uses a 0-4 scale (Not at all, Rarely, Sometimes, Often, Very Often) to measure symptom severity and frequency over the past month.

DSM-5 Criteria Met: We calculate which of the 5 DSM-5 criteria (B, C, D, E, F) you meet based on symptom thresholds, just like clinicians do.

Body-Based Score: Separate scoring for physical trauma symptoms (dissociation, somatic reactions, nervous system dysregulation) based on van der Kolk's research.

Severity Level: Your total score places you in one of 5 categories: Minimal, Mild, Moderate, Severe, or Extreme PTSD symptoms.

Personalized Protocol: Based on your specific symptom profile, you receive tailored recommendations including somatic practices (Somatic Experiencing, EMDR), nervous system regulation (Polyvagal exercises), herbal support, and when to seek professional help.
